When Good Things Become Idols by Victor Mushimbami

When Good Things Become Idols Introduction   Someone recently asked me to write more deeply on a topic I’ve been teaching, how we often create our own idols, call them “God,” and worship them while ignoring the true and living God who has revealed Himself in the Bible. This teaching has really touched many people, especially after I shared a true story. I had preached to someone whose boss told all workers not to go to church for six months, only to focus on work. But before those six months ended, the boss got very sick and had been down for more than a month. That’s one of many examples of how God can deal with us when we put other things before Him. The Danger of Divided Hearts We live in a world full of distractions, family, work, money, school, and even ministry. These things are not bad in themselves, but when they take more of our time, attention, and love than God, they become idols. And God is very clear: He is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). That means He wants all of us, n...

Lessons from Nature: Observing God’s Wisdom Through a Window

As I sat by the window, I watched nature unfold a powerful lesson before my eyes. The wind blew fiercely, shaking the tree outside. One of its branches, perhaps weakened over time, was knocked down. Not long after, the rain poured down, soaking the ground and the now-pruned tree. At first, it seemed like just another stormy day, but as I continued to observe, I realized there was a deeper message hidden in this simple yet profound moment.

This interplay between the wind, the tree, and the rain spoke volumes about life, challenges, and renewal. It was a glimpse into how God uses nature to teach us timeless truths about His creation, His care, and His purpose for our lives.

The Interplay of Nature: The Shaking and the Rain

What seemed like a random act of nature was anything but, the wind’s relentless shaking may have seemed harsh, but it was necessary. By knocking down a weak branch, the tree was pruned, enabling it to channel its energy toward growth and strengthening its remaining branches.

Then came the rain, a soothing balm to the tree. It nourished the roots, washed away dust and debris, and provided the life-giving water it needed to thrive. Together, the wind and the rain worked in harmony to renew and sustain the tree, ensuring its survival and future growth.

As I reflected on this, I realized how similar this process is to our lives.

Scriptures That Align with Nature’s Lessons

The Bible is filled with references to nature as a means of understanding God’s ways. Here are some scriptures that resonated with the scene I witnessed:

The Wind’s Purpose

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
Just as the wind shapes the tree, God’s Spirit moves in our lives, often in unseen and unexpected ways, refining and transforming us.

Being Like a Tree

“They are like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:3)
A tree firmly rooted by the stream remains steadfast, just as we are called to be rooted in God’s Word to weather life’s storms.

The Rain as Blessing

“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3)
The rain represents God’s provision, restoring and refreshing us in times of need.

Pruning for Growth

“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” (John 15:2)
Like the tree losing a branch, we too experience moments of pruning, which, though painful, prepare us for greater fruitfulness.

Lessons from the Scene Outside the Window

1. The Wind Represents Life’s Challenges
The wind shaking the tree reminded me of how challenges can disrupt our lives. These moments of shaking, though uncomfortable, are often God’s way of removing what is weak or unfruitful in our lives.

2. The Rain Symbolizes God’s Grace
After the wind came the rain, a reminder of how God pours out His grace and provision to restore us after trials. Just as the rain nourishes the tree, God’s Word and Spirit refresh our souls.

3. The Tree’s Resilience Mirrors Our Faith
The tree stood firm despite the storm, its roots anchored deep in the soil. Similarly, we are called to remain steadfast in faith, trusting that God is working all things for our good.

A Personal Challenge

As you read this, take a moment to reflect on the "storms" in your life. Are you facing a time of shaking, where certain things feel like they’re falling apart? Or perhaps you’re in a season of rain, where God is pouring out His blessings and restoring you.

Let the tree remind you to stand firm, rooted in God’s promises. Let the wind encourage you to embrace the challenges that prune and strengthen you. And let the rain inspire you to receive God’s grace and grow in His love.

Step outside or look through your own window. Observe the lessons that nature has to offer and remember: God is at work in every shaking and every storm, preparing you for greater fruitfulness.

This moment reminded me of God’s incredible design and His faithfulness in every season. Just as He cares for the tree, He cares for you. Trust Him to shape, strengthen, and sustain you through it all.
