When Good Things Become Idols by Victor Mushimbami

When Good Things Become Idols Introduction   Someone recently asked me to write more deeply on a topic I’ve been teaching, how we often create our own idols, call them “God,” and worship them while ignoring the true and living God who has revealed Himself in the Bible. This teaching has really touched many people, especially after I shared a true story. I had preached to someone whose boss told all workers not to go to church for six months, only to focus on work. But before those six months ended, the boss got very sick and had been down for more than a month. That’s one of many examples of how God can deal with us when we put other things before Him. The Danger of Divided Hearts We live in a world full of distractions, family, work, money, school, and even ministry. These things are not bad in themselves, but when they take more of our time, attention, and love than God, they become idols. And God is very clear: He is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). That means He wants all of us, n...

If Not Careful, Social Media Can Be a Battlefield: A Guide to Mindful Engagement

If Not Careful, Social Media Can Be a Battlefield: A Guide to Mindful Engagement

Introduction

In today’s interconnected world, social media has become a powerful space for connection, inspiration, and expression. However, without careful navigation, it can also turn into a source of frustration, misunderstandings, and unnecessary conflict. At Purpose Beyond Borders, we believe that social media can be a tool for spreading positivity and reaching those beyond our immediate reach. In this post, we explore ways to mindfully engage on social media, learning to appreciate diverse perspectives and focusing on meaningful connection.

Avoid Assumptions: You See Only a Small Part of the Picture

It’s easy to assume that what people post on social media reflects their entire lives. But do we truly see the full story? Often, social media captures just a fraction, perhaps only 10% of a person’s experiences. Before making judgments, consider that we may only be glimpsing part of their reality. This reminder helps us stay grounded and prevents us from jumping to conclusions based on limited information.

Appreciate the Diversity of Social Media

Every individual uses social media differently. For some, it’s a place to share personal moments or passions. For others, it’s a platform for sharing beliefs, ideas, or simply staying connected. Not every post is about us, and not every interaction should be viewed as a challenge. When we approach social media with an open mind, we appreciate the richness of varied perspectives and the opportunity for personal growth.

Every Post Is Not About You: Choose Not to Take Offense

We might sometimes feel targeted by posts that echo personal matters or opinions. However, it’s important to remember that most people share their thoughts openly without intending to affect anyone directly. Practicing the discipline of not taking offense helps us remain peaceful and focused on positive interactions. When we avoid taking things personally, we maintain a balanced, grounded presence on social media.

Social Media: A Tool for Reaching the Unreachable

For some, social media is more than just a space for updates, it’s a mission field. People use these platforms to connect with individuals who may not be accessible in person, planting seeds of hope, encouragement, or even spiritual guidance. By using social media to connect meaningfully and constructively, we have the chance to positively influence people who might otherwise never hear these messages.

Be Mindful of How You Use Social Media

Social media has the potential to be a space for support, connection, and growth if used wisely. When approached mindfully, it can be an uplifting, educational, and enriching tool. Rather than engaging in conflicts or spreading negativity, aim to share content that inspires, uplifts, and fosters community. Thoughtful engagement can transform social media from a battlefield into a place of support and encouragement.

Conclusion

Social media reflects the diversity and complexity of our world, and it requires a balanced, considerate approach. By choosing to see only part of the picture, appreciating differences, and resisting the urge to take things personally, we can make our social media experience more meaningful and uplifting. At Purpose Beyond Borders, we’re here to support you in using social media for positive connections and inspiring others.
